Typing Speed Test

Start typing to begin the timer.
WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
What is a good typing speed?
Words per minute follows the standard convention of five characters to a word, which is why WPM is comparable between tests even when the passages differ.
| Rating | Typing speed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Under 25 WPM | Hunting for keys rather than typing by touch. |
| AverageMost people | 35–45 WPM | Where most computer users sit without formal training. |
| Fast | 55–70 WPM | Confident touch typing — quick enough that thinking is the bottleneck. |
| Professional | 70–90 WPM | The level expected in transcription and data entry roles. |
| Elite | Over 90 WPM | Sustained speed usually built on years of daily typing. |
Reading the numbers: Accuracy is the number that decides your real speed. At 97% accuracy roughly one word in thirty needs fixing, and every correction costs more time than typing the word properly would have. A 70 WPM run at 90% accuracy is slower in practice than 60 WPM at 99%.

How the typing speed test works
Type the passage into the box. Each character is checked as you go — correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red — and the timer starts on your first keystroke. YourWPM uses the standard convention that five characters equal one word, so it's comparable with other typing tests.
Around 40 WPM is average, 60–70 is fast, and 80+ is professional. Accuracy counts too: racing ahead and backspacing is usually slower than typing a touch more carefully. Touch typing from the home row is the single biggest improvement most people can make. Your best WPM is saved locally.
Typing Speed questions, answered.
Why is my WPM lower here than on other tests?
Passage difficulty is usually the reason. Text with unusual words, capitals and punctuation is slower to type than plain lowercase prose, and every test uses different passages. Whether a test reports raw WPM or subtracts errors first matters too, so compare results within one test rather than across several.
How is WPM calculated?
The standard formula treats every five characters as one word, so WPM is (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. This test uses that convention and starts timing on your first keystroke.
Does accuracy affect my score?
Yes. The test reports both raw WPM and accuracy so you can see the trade-off. Slowing down slightly to reduce errors usually produces a higher effective speed than racing and backspacing.
How can I type faster?
Touch typing without looking at the keys, keeping your fingers on the home row, and practising regularly are the biggest wins. Consistency and accuracy build speed far faster than trying to rush.
